Collegio Santa Caterina da Siena was created in 1973 due to an initiative proposed by the dioceses of Pavia, following the wishes of Pope Paolo VI, and was formally consented to in 1997 at a conference held for university colleges recognised by the Ministero dellUniversità e della Ricerca (Ministry of Education), featuring as one of the founding members of Pavias Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori (I.U.S.S. - Institute for Further Studies).
The college is to be found in a modern and comfortable building with a large garden situated in Via San Martino 17/A, just a couple of steps away from the central university building, in the historical town centre. It is composed of a section reserved for undergraduate students and an adjacent, autonomous graduate student section, with both sections facing the colleges gardens, therefore creating a tranquil working environment. All of Pavias major public services and places of interest are accessible by foot.
The college accommodates 85 female students each year, chosen by merit and who are required to maintain a consistently high academic level. The students are accommodated in single rooms all with en suite facilities, free Internet access, communal kitchens, room cleaning service and free medical assistance. During the entire week a full cafeteria service is available, providing breakfast, lunch and dinner. Amongst other facilities offered by the college, there is a library, various communal living rooms (for study, reading and leisure activities), a conference room with a capacity of almost 200 places and a chapel.
College life is lively and good fun, marked not only by periods of study, but also by sport and moments of unity thanks to the rites and traditions of one of Italys oldest and most prestigious universities.
Each year a calendar of cultural events is created, with the active participation of the students themselves, including refresher courses and events designed to enrich student life, offering the unique opportunity to encounter academics and important cultural figures.
The colleges atmosphere favours the comparison and exchange of different cultural experiences, opens doors for debate and encourages tolerance and solidarity. The fact that there are students of various ages and academic interests, coming from all over Italy and elsewhere in the world, encourages a profitable exchange of experiences. From 1973 onwards students coming from every region of Italy and from multiple other countries have been accommodated at Santa Caterina: Albania, Australia, Brazil, Burundi, Cameroon, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Finland, France, Luxemburg, Poland, Portugal, Somalia, Spain, Switzerland, Sudan, Uganda, United States of America.
The college hosts two Masters courses every year, which have become points of reference in their own field, one, Master in professioni e prodotti delleditoria (professions and products in the publishing industry), and the other, an international Master in Cooperation and Development.
For the academic year 2011/2012, there will be three places available for foreign female students. These students will be placed in the graduate student section of the college in single rooms with three rooms sharing facilities, a weekly cleaning service and a kitchen on their floor. The cost for one of these places is estimated to be 500 Euros a month, which includes access to all the colleges services, including the cafeteria (breakfast, lunch and dinner) every day of the week. The deposit expected will be 300 Euros.
